tough loss to northride, but still in the semis

Nikon D3, 300mm, 3200iso, f/2.8, 1/800, manual

Last weeks soccer game was a hard one to watch. UCI did not play anywhere near as good as they could have. It made standing out in the cold even worse. The game was extremely physical and there was a lot of tension between both teams. There was almost a fight between some players and the coaches were going at it verbally on the sidelines too.

I tried to get some of the physicalness of the game in my photos.

art gallery assignment

Nikon D3, 50mm, 800iso, f/2.0, 1/320, manual

I took an assignment to shoot an art gallery on campus. When I got there it was empty. The only person inside was the person working there. Luckily I had one of my residents from my dorm with me and I had her walk around the gallery so I could get some more interesting shots.

lighting up a building

Nikon D3, 14-24mm @ 21mm, 160iso, f/16, 8 Sec, manual

I took a last minute assignment to shoot a Cafe on campus. At first I took the picture but was immediately unsatisfied. The photo was too plain so I decided to gel two flashes and light up the building from two different angles.

Below is the before photo.

long lens…shorts lens…experimenting with shooting styles

Nikon D3, 300mm, 2500iso, f/2.8, 1/800, manual

I’ve been shooting a lot with a 300mm lens. Mainly because I can’t afford a 70-200mm yet. I have noticed a difference in my shooting stye though. I haven’t been getting as close as I used to, although my photos look closer and tighter. Its good to practice a different technique…but I need that 70-200mm.

shooting pumpkins

Nikon D3, 14-24 @ 14mm, 320iso, f/2.8, 1/2000, manual

Lately I’ve been trying to make an effort to branch out and take assignments other than sports. This week I took an assignment to go to a pumpkin patch and take photos of pumpkins. I didn’t really know what to expect when I went out to shoot, but it was fun. It was different from shooting sports because I was able to take my time and really focus on light, composition and angle. Hopefully by taking more assignments like this one and working on other aspects of my photography, ill be able to bring some of those skills over and improve my sports shooting.

Fellow New University photographer Michael Karakash assisted me on this shoot. He played an important role in several of my photographs.

unlearning my laziness & working the sides

Nikon D3, 300mm, 3200iso, f/2.8, 1/640, manual

Usually I’m pretty lazy when it comes to shooting soccer and I end up posting myself near the goals and I don’t really move around too much. Its easy to shoot from there, I get faces, good action, the ball, and it never fails. The one thing that I seem to miss out on a lot is headers. The ball is usually kicked to far to get a usable shot, or the ball is kicked from the other side and I get photos of the players backs. I decided to work the sidelines a little more than usual and came back with some images that are a little different than my usual.
