When in Rome…bring an extra battery

This past summer I went to Valencia, Spain and stayed with my girlfriend while she did research. While over there we also took a trip to Rome. My camera charger broke due to the voltage difference and I didn’t notice until I went to charge my battery on our first night in Rome. I took as many pictures as I could before all the juice was absolutely drained. I looked all over for stores that would sell the charger that I needed but I found that Canon 1D chargers are apparently very hard to find. When I finally looked online I found that the price of a new one was around $400! I kept putting off getting an extra battery because they were $100+, but I wished I had bought one now.

back to the baseline, back to basics

Nikon D3, 50mm, 2000iso, f/2.0, 1/800, manual

Although basketball is one of my favorite sports to shoot, I feel like it is one of the sports that I need to work on shooting the most. I also feel like shooting with my strobes has limited the ways that I see when I shoot basketball. I am trying to go back to shooting without strobes and to focus more on action, composition, and different angles. I shot a UCI Womens Basketball game almost entirely with a 50mm, trying to see all the different shots i could get from the baseline. I hope get back to the basics and really develop a strong basketball background.

The other thing I am working on is cropping. I always imagined that good basketball photos would include the basket. I found that a lot of times I had good action going towards the basket but that it wasn’t necessarily close to the basket. I used to crop my photos to include the basket when this happened, but I would also end up with a lot of empty space. While looking recently through magazines and online I found that it is very common to just have shots of the players and that the basket is not necessary most of the time. I cropped most of these photo accordingly.

UCI comes close, but fails to advance in the NCAA tournament

Nikon D3, 300mm, 3200iso, f/2.8, 1/800, manual

The UCI Mens Soccer team won the Big West Championship for the second year in a row and earned a first round bye in the NCAA tournament. They also earned the 16th seed in the tournament and got to host Stanford in the second round. I was excited to shoot such a big game, especially after not being able to shoot the second round last year due to the game being on the east coast. As a fan it was a disappointing game, although as a photographer it was interesting and action packed. I tried to get some emotion from our team after the game but there really wasn’t much. There were handshakes, a few hugs, and then a huddle. Nothing too special to end the night.

back to shooting Volleyball from up top & reflections on the floor

Nikon D3, 300mm, 320iso, f/7.1, 1/250, manual

I finally got to use my strobes for the last Women’s home game of the season. It was in the Bren Events Center at UCI which also has higher locations to shoot from. One thing that I noticed from shooting up there were the reflections on the floor. From the angle that I was shooting at I could see the reflection of the fans in the stands right behind the court.

back to BBall, the start of the 2009-2010 season

I’ve been waiting a long time for basketball season to start up again. I was assigned to shoot the Women’s game but also stuck around after to watch the Men’s team and also get a few shots. No remotes were set up for the Women’s game but I had one set up on the post for the mens game.
