theres been talk of video…here it is

I have talked recently about doing a lot of video work. This past quarter I have been working for the UCI Athletics to create a promo video that sums up all the sports programs here at UCI.

The process included writing a script, a shot list, scheduling times to meet with athletes and teams, building a track and dolly, shooting, editing, reviewing, editing, and exporting.

The video was Narrated by Don Brantley.
The script was written by Ian Massey.
Pratik Panda was the main assistant.
CP Phan recorded the audio for the voice over.

Without the help of these people the video would not have turned out so well.

This is an example of the work I can produce. I am graduating in June 2010 and am looking for jobs.

Below, a screen shot from the basketball locker room.

Wayne - I’ve been following your work for a while now and I’m impressed at how well your photography talent has translated into your filming. You clearly have the cinematographer’s mindset and this video was well planned out and executed. UCI Athletics and all of UCI should be proud of this video. Keep up the hard work! Zot! Zot!

Big West Track & Field Championships

The Big West Conference Track and Field Championships was the last track event that I would be shooting this year. It was all the way up in Northridge but I decided to make the drive up because I hadn’t had a chance to shoot any photos lately and because the only other sport that was still happening was Baseball. I tried to shoot UCI athletes as much as possible but it was also nice being free to shoot whoever because I was not officially on assignment.

Check out some of the photos below and click here to see all of them.

busy shooting baseball

Nikon D3, 300mm, 3200iso, f/2.8, 1/800, manual

Spring quarter always keeps me busy with baseball. This year has been extra work as I have had to shoot video and photos at the same time. Every time I go out I look for different compositions, backgrounds, patterns, etc. Baseball is one of those sports where you have to wait around and be looking in the right place at the right time to get that amazing play. I go to so many games that I don’t have to wait for that amazing play, but instead move around and try to find an interesting angle on something that happens all the time. Here are some of my photos from the UCI games on May 4th and May 11th.

Johann - What an excellent piece of text! No idea how you wrote this article..it’d take me days. Well worth it though, I’d assume. Have you considered selling advertising space on your website?

Seeing Different Daily

5/1/10 – UC Irvine, Irvine, CA – During the 2010 Asics/Steve Scott Invitational, Kristi Fryar competes in the pole vault. Fryar went on to finish fifth in the women’s pole vault at 11-9.

I had about an hour free this past weekend and decided to walk over to the track and get a few shots at the 2010 Asics/Steve Scott Invitational. There wasn’t much happening when I got there and it was between shooting long jump or pole vault. I usually shoot long jump and the light was really bad so I decided  to practice shooting pole vault. When I first started shooting the pole vaulters there were no clouds and I was shooting with the sun behind me. I started looking for something more interesting and moved around to a few different angles. Usually on assignment I will try to get a good variety or photos. This time I just focus on making one strong photo. I need more days like this.

2010 UC1 24-Hour Mad FIlm Dash

On April 24th at 12am I participated in the UCI 24-hour Mad Film Dash for the first time. Every year I have wanted to do it but I have been busy. This was the first year that I got a chance to participate and it was a lot of fun. Stressful but fun. I was on a team made up of several kids from my dorm. We were given three genres to choose from, those being Superhero, Drama, or Music Video. We choose music video thinking that it was going to be the easiest, although found that it was much harder than we had anticipated. Everything from the idea, script, filming, location finding, and editing were all done in 24 hours.

We also had to incorporate a reusable bag, a reference to the UCI Bookstore, and the line “There’s more to it than that”.

Team name: Silly Hot dog Monsters
Team Number: 40
Title: Telephone (Lady Gaga ft. Beyonce)
Genre: Music Video
Artifact: Reusable Bag
Line: “There’s more to it than that”

Team Members:

– Pratik Panda
– Scott Roeder
– Jaclyn Wang
– Christine Mathewson
– Rashmi Guttal
– Jessica Enriquez
– Tiffany Anguiano

This film is made as part of the
UCI Computerstores 6th Annual 24-Hour Mad Film Dash.

Co-Sponsored by:
-The UCI Computerstore (a department of The UCI Bookstore)
-Apple
-LaCie
-AMP Energy
-Film & Media Studies
-The Claire Trevor School of the Arts

The video was shot completely on a Canon 7D and with a 50mm 1.8. We used a custom DIY dolly for the rolling/panning shots. For lighting, we just grabbed desk lamps and other lights from our rooms and just lugged them around form location to location.

Here are some shots of the crew at two of the music video locations.

Oh Man! Clothing Photoshoot…trying out the commerical side

One of the kids from my dorm, Nam Ho, asked me if I could do a photoshoot for his clothing line Oh Man! Clothing. I was a little hesitant because I usually just shoot sports and didn’t have much experience shooting commercial type of stuff. It was fun and turned out pretty well. I had help moving equipment around from my usual assistant Pratik Panda and fellow photographer Lee.

Check out the slide show below.
