testing the d3s and a 400mm with UCI Volleyball

Nikon D3s, 400mm, 4000iso, f/2.8, 1/800, manual

On the first night of Sports Shooter Academy VII there were no official events to shoot, but there was still a Volleyball game going on at UCI. I checked out one of the new D3s’ and a 400mm, then headed back to school. The ISO levels were amazing just like all the reviews, and shooting with a 400mm wasn’t to bad either.

ASUCI Presents: Common, B.O.B, The Cool Kids

Nikon D3, 70-200mm @ 70mm, 1250iso, f/2.8, 1/400, manual

ASUCI put together a great line up for a concert this quarter. This is most likely the last concert that I will be shooting and I was happy to be able to get a pass. The Cool Kids were a lot better in person and Common’s routine was pretty crazy. Here are some of my photos.

shooting volleyball from close up, working on framing

Nikon D3, 70-200mm @ 200mm, 2500iso, f/2.8, 1/640, manual

Lately ive decided to go without the strobes, move closer, and challenge myself a little. In volleyball there are always players getting in the way. The ball moves extremely fast. Faces are covered by the next. The net steals the focus. But sometimes you need to work at it. Never settle.

Ants vs Eaters Baseball Feature

Jeff Cusick and Danny Bibona from the UCI Baseball team pose for a portrait.

During fall quarter I did a shoot with two of the UCI Baseball team players, Danny Bibona and Jeff Cusick. The article was about Ants vs Eaters baseball series, which is a inter-squad series of games to get them started for the season. The photo turned out pretty good and the photo editor and the sports editor wanted to save it for a later issue so that they could print it bigger and in color.

Long story short, it finally got printed in winter quarter but ended up not getting printed bigger or in color.

Below, assistants Marlon Castillo and Pratik Panda stand in for a test shot.

The Breakfast Club (remix)

One of the kids in my dorm was doing a breakfast club remake for her school project. She asked me if I could do the photos so I set some time aside and made it happen.

I used my blue backdrop since it was the only one I had, and just setup a little studio in the living room of my dorm. The shots for her project were done pretty quick, but we spent hours after just taking photos for fun. The rest of the photos can be seen here.

Photoshoot: UCI Baseball Player Francis Larson

Nikon D3, 70-200mm @ 105mm, 125iso, f/8, 1/250, manual
UC Irvine Baseball catcher Francis Larson poses for a portrait.

When I got the call for this photo I knew I wanted to shoot it on a backdrop. I don’t really get to shoot much stuff on a backdrop and wanted to get the studio feel for a change. I realized that I didn’t have any backdrop paper and that I would need to go out and get some before the shoot. I decided to buy a blue one and figured it would be good since its one of our school colors.

I made sure that he brought as much of his gear as possible for props, but also had him in a nice shirt and tie to show the scholarly and professional side of his personality. I originally wanted to have him wearing his uniform underneath his dress shirt but when we actually tried it the photos didn’t turn out as I expected. I had a back up plan and we tried a few different things during the rest of the shoot. These were the shots that I ended up submitting to the paper.

Thanks to Lee and Panda for helping assist on the shoot, and Ian for doing the interview.
