Homemade Sushi Round One

Canon 5DMKII, 24mm, 800iso, f/2.0, 1/40, manual

Alyssa and I made sushi last week and it was awesome. It tasted just like anything I would usually get at a sushi restaurant. Making the rolls were pretty easy, but the surprisingly hard part was cutting the rolls. I love sushi and this is something that I definitely want to get good at. And that reminds me, I love spam masubi too…I need to get on that.

I recently picked up a 24mm f/1.4 for my 5D and had a hard time deciding between that and the 35mm. I tend to prefer a wider lens so I decided to try out the 24mm for a while. Having a prime is something I wanted because zoom lenses make me lazy and this will force me to move more and work harder for my photos. I am still trying to tell if the lens is sharp wide open at 1.4-1.8. I’m not very used to shooting with that wide of an aperture so its hard to tell if I am just missing my focus or if its the lens. What do you do if your copy is not sharp? Send it in? I need to look into that. Looks like for now I have more testing to do…I haven’t used it too much yet but I intend for it to be my smaller and lighter walk-around lens to replace my 24-70mm.

Is anybody else shooting with or used to shoot with the 24mm f/1.4? Opinions? Tips?

Also, the auto white balance on the 5D is driving me crazy. I don’t know if it was the lights inside the house but the raw files were so warm. Still getting used to this 5D too.

Enjoy some photos of our fine dining.

The Fuji X10 is slowly become a go-to camera when I’m out and about. I’ll usually let Alyssa handle it when I using my 5D.

Melly Lee - Did you grab a 24L? I’m looking to pick up one too.

December 14, 2011 - 2:52 pm

scaughty - Yeah I just got it like a week or two ago. I like it. Are you using any primes right now?

December 15, 2011 - 7:14 am

Melly Lee - nice how do you like it? I’ve been on a 35, 55, and 85 for the last year and half

December 15, 2011 - 9:01 am

scaughty - So far its great! I usually shoot at 24mm a lot with my 24-70mm so it was a good choice. I still want to try the 35mm though at some point. I just need to test the focus out some more on this one to make sure its sharp.

Melly Lee - Come back down for a visit and we’ll go shooting ๐Ÿ™‚

December 15, 2011 - 10:16 am

scaughty - Yeah I want to make another trip back down although it might be hard in the winter cause I’ll be snowboarding as much as I can on my free weekends…I definitely make it down by the summer…

2011 USAU College Championships Women’s Semifinals: UCSB vs Stanford

Canon 1DMKIV, 300mm, 250iso, f/2.8, 1/3200, manual

Burning Skirts is one of my favorite women’s teams to shoot because they are always making huge plays, dominating, and having fun. Here are a few shots from the semifinals match up between UCSB and Stanford. Lots of familiar faces in this one.

2011 USAU College Championships: Random set

Canon 1DMKIV, 300mm, 400iso, f/2.8, 1/2500, manual

I was in Monterey this past weekend getting my open water scuba certification so wasn’t able to work much on the photos from the third day of the 2011 USAU College Championships. Ultimate photos aren’t all about skying, scoring, and getting layout D’s. Here are a couple photos of the catch attempts that didn’t quite make it, endzone celebrations, and conflict resolution.

More photos coming soon.

There aren’t many good photos of people spiking the disc. A freeze frame of the action usually just looks awkward…

Talk it out. The unique thing about ultimate is the way disputes are handles. It has its pro and cons, but is definitely a pain when you are shooting ultimate because it completely stops play.

2011 USAU College Championships โ€“ Day 2

Canon 1DMKIV, 300mm, 250iso, f/2.8, 1/4000, manual

Layout catches and D’s. Those are the plays that make me want to shoot Ultimate. There is so much going on that choosing which games to shoot and which angles to shoot from is always a dilemma. Every time I go out and shoot a tournament I always end my first day of shooting a little disappointed. Its not that I get bad shots on the first day, but usually on the second day I’ve gotten into my groove and get some really good ones. A lot of it is has to do with being in the right place at the right time.

Below are some of the layout plays that I got from Saturday (Day 2) of the 2011 USAU College Championships.

2011 USAU College Championships – Day 1

Canon 1DMKIV, 300mm, 320iso, f/2.8, 1/4000, manual

Back in May I went out to Boulder, Colorado to shoot the 2011 USAU College Championships. It was my birthday weekend and I choose to spend it working hard in the sun, meeting deadlines, and doing what I love. Plus not all was lost as I celebrated my birthday for the whole week after I got back. It was a win-win. These photos have been put on the back-burners since I started working full time but trying to post everyday is motivating me to make them a priority. Check out a few shots below and then head HERE to see all the photos from Day 1.

I really like the framing on this one. It’s not very often that Ultimate is covered by professional news outlets so the huge CBS Sports Alt Games banner serves as a nice backdrop that brings some legitimacy to the sport.
