During Presidents Day weekend I shot an Ultimate Frisbee Tournament in San Diego. The last day of the tournament was moved to San Bernardino due to rain and field closures in SD. I came prepared with water-proof pants, jackets, rain cover for my 70-200mm, rain cover for my 400mm, gloves, etc.
I had shot in rain before but nothing had prepared me for this. It rained all day, from the moment I woke up till I got back home from shooting. It didn’t just rain, it poured. It was cold and wet. In between each game I went back to my car and turned the heat on full blast for about 10 minutes just so I could feel my fingers again.
It was a three day tournament, and I got a lot of good photos on each day. But its not everyday, I shoot in such extreme conditions. I know a lot of photographers shoot in conditions like this or worse everyday, but in Orange County its pretty rare.
Here are some of the shots from the rainy day.

Last week our Mens Volleyball team played in Crawford instead of the Bren Events Center. Crawford is more like a high school gym, which would lead you to assume is dark, smaller, and less inviting to shoot in.
Its not too bad. In fact, I like it a lot. Especially for volleyball. The lighting is pretty decent, there is a stage on one side that you can stand on, and you can get close to the action. The angle is pretty unique considering that I’m shooting with a 70-200mm. If I was shooting in the bren, I would have to shoot with at least a 300mm, which I can’t afford. Shooting in here lets me compose tight images which is something that I’m always working on.
I’ve been pretty busy lately and haven’t been shooting much. During a basketball game I shot about two weeks ago, I switched between using my strobes and using available light throughout the game depending on which side of the court I was on. Here are some shots from the game.
Last week our school got blacked out in Eater Nation t-shirts for the ESPNU televised basketball game against Cal State Northridge. UCI beat CSUN 73-51. Here are a few photos from the game:
Excellent composure on a lot of these shots… 1, 6, and 7 are great.

Just when I though I had it all figured out, I learn something new.
Lately I realized that when shooting with my strobes, its most effective to shoot from a higher angle. Because I’m only lighting half the court, the other half disappears and I lose the “game” feeling. At a recent volleyball game I decided to shoot from as high up as I could get. It helped with the lighting but also helped a lot with getting the players faces. When shooting at net level or lower, the players faces often are obstructed by the top of the net. This problem was solved by shooting higher up. It also cleaned up the backgrounds and provided for much more focused images.
You were also able to get the face of the pretty little ref on the side. Nice!
